Last November, for the first time, we wanted to do something sustainable for nature for our customers instead of Christmas presents. We looked for an organisation that reforests woodland, and ideally in our region. That is how we came across the «Stiftung Unternehmen Wald», which reforests woodland in southern Baden among other places.

The «Stiftung Unternehmen Wald» was founded in 2006 and is a charitable foundation based in Hamburg that is committed to promoting nature conservation, landscape management and sustainable development. Here we introduce a current reforestation project of the foundation in southern Germany:

«Ash trees in Germany and Europe are severely endangered. Ash dieback, caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus, has affected almost all ash trees. The infestation leads to the death of the trees. As yet there is no resistance. The fungus is leaving its mark on the western slopes of the Black Forest too. Several stands of ash in the woodlands of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district authority are in the process of dying. The diseased trees had to be felled. From autumn 2020 the areas were reforested with native deciduous tree species. The main species is the pedunculate oak, mixed with small-leaved lime, hornbeam and European white elm. All the tree species are well adapted to the site and will in future provide a home for many animal and plant species. The tree species are also expected to withstand climate change.»

For the first time last December, Vanillaplan was able to donate a hundred trees - oaks and elms on a patch of woodland near Freiburg im Breisgau. We then wanted to know what such a reforested woodland area actually looks like. So on 5 December we made a trip to the forest area mentioned above, which lies between Tiengen and southern Freiburg. Here you will find a link to the map. It was easy to find. The first thing we noticed was the many felled, diseased tree trunks. In a large clearing we then found thousands of young trees, among them the clearly recognisable pedunculate oak. We think it is a worthwhile and wonderful project and will support the «Stiftung Unternehmen Wald» again this year with a generous tree donation instead of Christmas presents for customers.
