Tip 1: clear out and delete instead of saving and hoarding
We all know it: chaos in your files, overflowing storage and bulging email inboxes where, alongside the emails, you could really just delete the whole account. Do it! Besides a more relaxed experience, you will save a fair amount of electricity.
Tip 2: send download links instead of attaching large files
Construction plans, data models or videos - whenever you want to send larger amounts of data to others, a download link is the considerably more energy-efficient route compared with the classic email attachment.
Tip 3: adaptive brightness instead of full illumination
Less is more: adjust the brightness of your screen automatically to your surroundings and your activity. That way you have the right lighting conditions at all times and even save energy in the process.
Tip 4: consume offline instead of online
Netflix, YouTube, Spotify - a large part of the data volume used on the internet can be traced back to the use of streaming services. The solution: download content that you consume more often, such as favourite songs or series. That way it only has to be downloaded once instead of being streamed live again and again.
Tip 5: standby mode and switching off instead of screensavers and leaving things running
Your computer needs a break too! Put it into standby mode during your breaks. Screensavers, by contrast, are an absolute no-go: colourful 3D animations may be fascinating to watch, but they are real power guzzlers. At the end of the day you should shut the computer down completely rather than putting it into standby, and disconnect it from the mains. Only then does it really use no electricity at all.
Tip 6: cloud use in a data centre instead of your own server in-house
Better cooling options, more efficient use of heat, more ideal server utilisation: a data centre specialising in data processing beats the in-house server on most counts where energy is concerned. In many cases it is therefore worth storing your data at data centres rather than hosting it yourself.
Tip 7: use technology to optimise energy consumption rather than increase it
Ideally your IT does not only consume energy but can even help save some: use intelligent systems to control your lighting, heating or ventilation automatically, so that they are perfectly coordinated and no energy is wasted.
Tip 8: repair and upgrade instead of throwing away and buying new
One thing is clear: the most energy-saving technology is technology that was never produced in the first place - after all, a large part of a device's CO2 consumption goes back to its production. It therefore makes sense to look for modular products when buying: individual parts such as RAM, hard drive, graphics card or battery can then be replaced if they fail, or upgraded to a more powerful version. That way it does not always have to be the very newest product - which is cheaper and easier on resources too.
Tip 9: refurbished store instead of electronics wholesaler
Buying new does not mean buying brand new: refurbished IT is hardware that has been overhauled by specialists and professionally reconditioned. Completely checked over and equipped with the latest software, it is a genuine alternative to new products! Using devices more than once reduces both the creation of electronic waste and the production and transport of new products - a win-win situation. So if you are thinking about a new purchase, or your device has served its purpose for your needs, a trip to the refurbished store can definitely be worthwhile.
Tip 10: optimised for the specific use instead of over- or under-dimensioned
Workplaces with dust exposure such as construction sites or production halls, the IT department in a technology company, or the private user who just checks their emails in the evening: in all these scenarios the demands on the technology are different. The hardware in question should therefore be matched to the conditions of use: screen, processor and graphics card should be neither too large and powerful in terms of electricity consumption, nor too small and underpowered in terms of service life. The rule here is: as large as necessary, as small as possible.
